long before that stupid Tommy Hilfiger knock-off show aptly named "The Cut" was cut, Project Runway was the shit. I knew from the get-go that this show is amazing, inspirational, informational and very individual. My only concern the first season was the lack of Asians and/or Asian-American participation. As we all know, and as the world knows, Asian talent in fashion design is bar none some of the greatest out there (Yohji Yamamoto, Kenzo, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, Hanae Mori, Issey Miyake and Vera Wang to name a few). There is so much to be said about non-western ideals and perception of beauty that needs to be recognized here in the west. Asian designs are fresh, meaningful, enigmatic, deeply-rooted in their cultural upbringings and very much fashion-forward. So I was so ecstatic that there's 2 prominent Asian-Americans in Project Runway 2: Chloe Dao (young, hip, trendy, classy) and Diana Eng (futuristic, post-modern, experimental, analytical). Wish 'em the best.
Project Runway 2 premieres this Wednesday, 12/7/05 at 10pm/9c on Bravo.

12.2.05: Design class was extraordinary lengthy...huge amounts of important information condensed in a 7 hour-straight lecture...touching on topics such as: technicalities, business, law, layout, money, government, ethics, portfolio etc. One of the more interesting topics was portfolio "content considerations." So the article we had to read specified that "sexually-explicit material" need not be in a student portfolio...I brought up the issue to the class and our teacher made a really good point about the whole thing. I seriously thought she was going to go and support what the article had proposed but she was able to present both sides of the situation. She said that if the design was tasteful and done in a great manner, then there's no problem to it. She also mentioned that I needed to be aware of the environment (corporate culture) of the place i'm presenting my portfolio to. A great point was made when she specified that if she was to present the same "sexy material" to a client and the client was not open-minded enough to even give her a chance, then she probably won't want to work with that client. Which leads me to this question: WHO specifies "tasteful portrayal"? should i be listening to the media who was originally and intentionally perpetuating continuous stereotypes? i'm not in the position to say that my works doesn't do so because i'm aware that part of my skills and vision were partly shaped by the media around me (disclaimer: the mock Roberto Cavalli designs I created above were not intended to perpetuate stereotypes, it was just an experiment in layout and direction). Sex Sells...that's reality but when does it go so far? Everything is subjective in this world...in my opinion Objectivity is Subjectivity in Disguise. just something to think about....
DEATH
12.3.05: A terrible tragedy happened yesterday here in The Village. While enjoying my late-night dinner, roomie called and informed me that he had just witnessed a dead person laying on the ground, blood splattered everywhere. The scene happened behind Building A (our building) facing Font Blvd. Ambulance, Paramedics, Police...name it...It was scary, crazy, unexpected. RIP IVAN ZIMMERMAN.

12.4.05: So I went to Borders at Stonestown tonight. I was there for about 3 hours or so yet within that 3-hour period, I was able to consumer 3 Large Lattes so now i'm on a freakin' sugar high with a wee bit headache. I love bookstores especially Borders because I can just cuddle up in the corner of the Design Section and amazed at the quantity of design/art books that they have. It seriously fascinates me to the point that I go 3 rounds or so viewing the whole shelf. Talk about living, breathing design. So my aunt gave me this $20 gift card for Borders and I thought "fine i'll go up to $40 on a book." I found this book: Digital Illustration: A Master Class in Creative-Making by Lawrence Zeegen. Just what I needed all this time...a very informational/visually stunning book fusing illustration techniques with graphic design. So I bought it to add to my library of oober cool books for reference and/or inspiration. I should be studying for finals but whatever...

GREEN DESIGN

Tonight's the last day of lecture for my Design History class. I'm sad and inspired: sad because an important part of my design life is coming to a close end, inspired because i'm going out with newfound knowledge not only on the basis of history but also practical applications and socio-cultural considerations in design. We ended the final lecture with Green Design, its historical roots, the important people/organizations who implement it, and a close look on its complexities, effectiveness, and its promise for a better tomorrow.
Throughout my whole career in design, i've been questioning my role in society, not only as a designer of products, but more so as a consumer of goods. The final lecture opened my eyes to so many possibilities in "better design in respect to nature". The fact that society is now slowly realizing the high importance of the environment as it relates to our lifestyle is a great case study. I HOPE TO BE AN ADVOCATE OF GREEN DESIGN IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER: be it design considerations (materials, processes etc.), environment awareness (knowledge of the implications), or responsible consuming (recycle, reuse, reduce), etc.
"AT WHAT COST?": 3 simple words that can make all that difference.
I'm continuously learning on how to be better: in attitudes, perspectives, opinions...I grow by every idea that filters through like a tiny, little seedling that sprouts up through the help of rain, sunshine and good soil. I will become a continually growing tree, with its roots held tight in the ground and its branches constantly reaching for the stars. I'm Jason-in-Progress.

FORMULA 17: excerpt from Rotten Tomatoes:
Directed by 23-year-old Yin-jung Chen (AKA DJ Chen), FORMULA 17 puts a lighthearted, humorous spin on gay life in Taiwan, painting an idealized portrait that contains no mention of the difficulties associated with the gay community. Ponderous topics like AIDS, societal pressures, or coming-out issues are absent, and there are no women or straight people--only beautiful young men with hearts more or less made of gold. This candy-coated depiction comes off as a refreshing celebration of the simple joy of being young, gay, and in love.
Tien is a 17-year-old country boy who has just arrived in Taipei to meet an internet friend he has been corresponding with. It soon becomes clear, however, that the prospective man of Tien's dreams--whose online handle is "Beast Man"--is only out for one thing, so Tien flees to a nightclub where his childhood friend, the flamboyant Yu, slings drinks with enthusiasm. Yu takes his nave friend under his wing, scoffing at Tien's dogged insistence on waiting for love before he loses his virginity, and attempting to educate him in the ways of urban existence. Tien persists in his virtue, resisting the advances of a hunky plumber hired by Yu and his crew of queens for the purposes of deflowering the boy. Meanwhile, it seems Tien has caught the eye of the local playboy, Bai, whose reputation for loving and leaving is well-established. Tien is likewise drawn to Bai but is justly wary of his past, and the two enact a halting courtship fraught with misunderstanding that stems from Bai's fear of intimacy. The entirety of the film takes on the structure of a Greek comedy, complete with a chorus--Yu and his friends, who provide humorous commentary on the action--and a deux ex machina that pretty much saves the day. There is never any real doubt as to how this love story will end, but the pleasure of the story lies in the telling.
MY TAKE ON IT:
Rotten Tomatoes was head on in describing this movie. I didn't expect much in the beginning, I'm just happy another Asian movie is hitting the independent movie arena here in SF. All I know from the beginning was that the movie was banned in Singapore because of subject matter (homosexuality). After watching the movie, I can truly say that THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I'VE SEEN IN MY WHOLE LIFE. It could be due to the fact that it's candy-coated and fantasy-like but the fact that it was able to bring so much life and relatability to the characters is super amazing. In a strictly serious time that we're in, it's quite refreshing to see such innocent hope for optimism and love. To say that Formula 17 is just a typical coming of age movie would be an understatement. The movie is layered with extremely vibrant personalities, cross-cultural humor, creative story-telling and just an overall feel for self-expression. It'll tickle the "cuteness" in you. Last time I checked, they were trying to appeal to have this movie disbanned and shown in Singapore. I support that. One can learn and appreciate so much raw talent in the way this film was handled, the way the story was wrote, and the way the characters grow on you. Formula 17 is romantic comedy with an added heart and laughs. By the way, I just pre-ordered the DVD that's coming out on 11/29. I'm psyched.

"This is an honest, touching, and hilarious depiction of Taiwanese gay teen life, chronicling an innocent 17-year old boy’s summer of love and adventure in the big city. Banned in Singapore for creating “an illusion of a homosexual utopia, where everyone, including passersby, is homosexual and no ills or problems are reflected...It conveys the message that homosexuality is normal, and a natural progression in society”.

PROBLEMS:
Required Components:
1. Time: expressed through text, imagery, page turning etc.
2. Space: express spatial relationships through area, length, depth, connection, or imagery
3. Sequence: consider division of the book, the pace, tempo, rhythm, breaks, repeats, format and buildup
4. Narrative: first, second, third person? short or lengthy? more than one voice? conversation? memory? conscience?
Physical Form Requirements:
- Physical form should be appropriate to the concept. The book should have at least 10 spreads (not including cover). Photography is the visual medium. Requirement: Use of original photography.
SOLUTIONS: Utilize San Francisco Love Parade (an incredible experience) to illustrate my own concept of journey. Format is a non-traditional timeline with heavy emphasis on original photography and color considerations. The book itself has to speak to the vibrance and energetic feel of the event. I did these by: First, highlighting each individual's personalities (the costume they wore becomes the main focal point) and slight outlines. Second, the use of a unified color system (the idea is not to go for the obvious neon colors but to show vibrance without being too obvious: bump up saturation). Third, typography considrations: The Font "Rosewood" was prevalent in the years and topic headings (the structure of Rosewood type signifies celebration, fun, craziness). Fourth, the layout is consistent with each and every panel; the timeline requirement was achieved by setting each and every panel to contain a year's summary for the specific Love Parade Festival event for that particular year. A super long horizontal format (kind of like a cd booklet you pull out and opens up horizontally) is utilized. Not only does that speak to the basic concept of a "parade" but it also dual functions as an appropriate format for a timeline.

the cheap $2 plastiTAc I bought to put my pictures up in the wall is slowly losing its grip...being the icked-out doodie that i am I can't help but look at it constantly, been wanting to push it in again/to make the stuff adhere once more but somehow I noticed a certain beautiful imbalance as they fall apart. Maybe it speaks to the higher concept of ineffective perfection: that no matter how much one tries to make everything clear cut...the reality is that imperfection is inevitable, i'ts bound to happen, it's what it is intended do. I then remember a lecture in Design History about the dynamics of chaos. The idea was brought up that imperfection and imbalance permeate the natural order of things.

So i'm completely indecisive on the format of this effin blog. What can I do? i'm a freakin PERFECTIONIST. I was hanging out with Donna earlier today. Damn it's been forever since I last saw her. It's great to reconnect with friends I haven't seen for what seems like a century. I was back in Vallejo this last weekend. Grams cooked up my favorite Filipino dish: Sinigang and I ate like it's the last meal of my life. I miss real food...canned tuna, frozen pizza and stale sandwich can only go so far...yeeks...Totally appreciated what Grams did for me...Oober Awesome. I didn't see Edward though, our pet peacock back home (And yes there actually is a peacock in our backyard in Vallejo).
So my ass has been working on this GD3 infographic poster due this friday. Weird enough, I'm actually psyched about this one. After I fucked up on the book project last time, I felt the need to push myself and my capabilities in designing; I did a Fawesome great job. All the critiques and negative comments pushed my ass for the better. I have 3 days left to layer my poster with more information...the main problem I run into was that the oversimplicity of the poster led to that same exact problem: oversimplification. My goal in the next 3 days is to introduce that balance once again. At the end of the day though, I get iffy thinking that my control will transfer to the "printers" and if these people do a half-ass job, then i'm screwed! I'm anal like that...Guarantee is a good thing. Surprizes are sometimes scary. And Asha told me converting files to PDF fucks up the color...arrrgghh..hope it's not a radical shift in gradations.
The semester's ending in a couple of weeks. My experience here went by so quick that most of my memories revolve around me drinking coffee twice a day...sad but true. I seek balance and hopefully balance seeks me. And if we do end up meeting in between I wish to occupy the extra time I have with satisfying my cravings for social interactions or even possible relationships. It's great to know that after a really stressful day, that there's that special somebody who will just hug you really tight and make you feel all happy inside. Maybe then, I would reconsider cutting down on my caffeine intake. I might even break up with Hazelnut and Toffee.
What I need right now:
1. Haircut
2. Massage
3. Peace of Mind and Total Tranquility.
I miss Stitch. Anna got an Apple Powerbook and an Ipod Nano for her bday (As Gifts mind ya!). Norman saw a weird duck with a protruding side neck on the lake. Joey was putting up his storyboard photograph presentation for his Film class. Peter questioned why he was single on Myspace. Margie approved my testimonial. Mr. Giliginich is effin stressed on the GD3 poster. Donna dropped a 3-unit class and my milk is 4 days expired. I'm tired, sleepy and horny. GO FIGURE!

currently listening to: Rockapella's "Beethoven's Fifth Symphony"
I just discovered Rockapella's music about 2 weeks ago and I'm still flabbergasted by how extremely melodic their voices are. I say gone were the days when music solely functions under the authenticity of the singers' voices and tonal qualities. It's great to look back once in a while and take a break from all these industrial sounds, techno rhythms, and lip synced performances.
here's an excerpt from their Official Website:
"Long ago and far away in Providence, Rhode Island, a few young men began something which over the next decade would build from a collegiate hobby into a national phenomenon... Often imitated; never duplicated, this certifiably unique pop musical group has taken the previously stodgy music genre of a cappella and brought it full-force into the 21st century. Their story is like no other, and they create a sound and impression like no one else!

I screwed myself yesterday...
...well kinda, sorta. I woke up 10 minutes before my first class starts so I was frantic once again. As I rush through the campus trying not to be late, I realized that it happened again...I told myself the night before (as I usually do) that i'm just going to take a 30-min. nap, get back to my project, finish it, and work on my Physics write-up; I ended up oversleeping...and "unaccomplished". It's moments like these that I question why i'm having such a hard time with academia. I was telling my roommate how I don't mind going to class, participating and such, yet the very act of "doing homework" comes naturally difficult for me. These things throws me off balance...to the point where i'm so close to falling in the water and drowning. well kinda, sorta.
so I ended up not going to design class because I don't have anything to present. The stresses from the last book project still insanely lingers so I never really had the energy to start and ideate for a new one...but i'm well aware that I NEED TO, not just for the grade, but for my design career in general. If I want to be the best designer there is, I have to form productive habits and keep at it...keep at it no matter what.
I went to Japantown with Alvin. I jokingly told Norman that I needed to go to a Zen Garden at J-town and reflect on the stresses of the week. Laugher all around; deep inside, i'm partly serious...I do feel like I needed to meditate...to seriouslly assess why things are fallling apart right in front of me. ON THE LIGHTER THINGS, J-town is always amazing...the tranquility and calm atmosphere is perfect for such a gloomy, cold weather. We spent most of our time at Nijiya Market; Alvin deciding which Gatsby product is better for his hair (matte or superhold) and me deciding which junkfood to buy...ahh! the good things in life...junkfood and hair products. I spent about $30 so so on food...J-town's kinda expensive but I think it's worth it (see picture of some of the stuff I bought). After grocery shopping, we head to a J.restaurant had some J.food and had a Juper Jawesome Jime Jeating. MISO SOUP IS THE SHIT!...
after J-town we head back to the dorms, fixed my hair some more...headed to Club Dragon with Alvin, Jason, and Ricky and I'm officially back in the "meat market," after a brief hiatus. I saw a couple of familiar faces and a whole lot of unfamiliar ones, it's hard loosening up w/o my friend Alcohol to accompany me...hehehe. It was a pretty good night though...Then right after, went to IHOP at DC, met with Thomas, had some Sampler Combo, and drove back to SFSU.
Drained. Doomed. Dead.
well kinda, sorta.

So I got a letter from Cingular informing me that i'm now eligible for a phone upgrade (what a suck ass marketing scheme...basically means that in order for me to take advantage of the 'proposed' upgrade, I have to renew my already existing 2-year contract which is expiring in a couple of months...i say NO!)moving on...
I can talk shit about Cingular all day but i'd rather focus on the imagery of the black envelope. I have to admit, the black envelop they used for their marketing scheme was quite scrumptious...as yummy as the chocolate chip cookie i'm consuming right now...yes indeed. I think this brought up a very good point in design: that the "unexpected" reigns supreme if the goal of the design is to capture people's attention. When one thinks of Cingular, the usual association is with its color; the fascinating thing about it though was that by purely extracting the object of its most inherent characteristic, which in this case is the color orange, we are able to see possibilities in form. Hence, design education's push for logos/logotypes that can work well and transfer as black and white. Good Form Equals Good Gestalt; Black is just effin UNIVERSAL and way cool...something about the effects of a less saturated, white type on black background; a simple play on positive-negative image that works well. Props to Cingular's innovative attempt...but that's about it.

It was a wild day yesterday, just when I thought things couldn't get more complicated...they did.
There's something about the design of the coffee lid that doesn't function right. Whenever I buy coffee and drink it, it always ends up drippin' on my shirt or whatever is within close radius. The thing leaks from the inside out...not just one but all of them. By the end of Physics class, I accidentally tripped on the coffee causing massive overflow on SCI 101...geez dude...I just had to make that sudden escape...it was a total guilt trip.
I've been working on this book project for Design class since friday night. I basically locked myself in the room and forced "work time"...if I didn't, I would've procrastinated again...doing a half-ass job in production. I had the main project panels printed at Rapid SFSU for $40...kinda pricey but oh well...dimensions: 24 X 36 on high glossy paper; too bad they don't do double-sided printing. The overall design was painstakingly effective (pics soon to follow)...
So I got back from the printer around 3pm. I was all freaked out thinking i'm an hour late for my Colloquium class, debating constantly on whether or not I should still go in...I checked my schedule and soon realized that the class was not at 2pm but that it starts at 4....arrgghh...I GOT MYSELF STRAIGHT TRIPPIN' BOO!

Dark coffee today...it's not quite a sugarry morning. I wasn't prepared for my physics test at 9 & I have a midterm exam and presentation for Design History later...arrrgghh... I tried studying last night, nothing registered...still preoccupied with thoughts on my book design project; gotta push it! DESIGN MORE, DESIGN BETTER...I need to find that balance though, gotta do it SOON. Maybe tomorrow, i'll go back to the slightly sweet java, but today...i'll settle for bitterness...By the way, the plain white walls in the living room of our dorm seems so blah...so I bought this magazine IDN (International Design Network) for $15, ripped the hell out of it and plastered the shit on the wall...Gotta have inspiration...Visuals get me going; Mohsen added a couple of car pictures...the whole wall itself is a design-in-progress...Norm said he'll put up he's tagged up Graffiti soon...GOOD STUFF.
